Person therapy is based on the belief that everyone has the capacity and ability for personal growth and change. However, this growth can become blocked or distorted by certain life experiences, particularly those the experiences which affect our sense of value. The therapist in this approach works to understand an individual’s experience from their perspective, acknowledging that every individual is an expert about their own life. The role of the person centred therapist is to offer individuals unconditional positive regard and empathy while aiming to be open and genuine. By offering a therapeutic relationship in which they feel accepted and valued, the person can then reconnect with their inner values, sense of self-worth and find their own way to move forward.
